Fluid Trumpets

Fluid Trumpets — Technical Specifications

  • Name: Fluid Trumpets
  • Publisher: Cinematic Composing
  • Format: CC-Sampler Plugin (VST3, AU, CLAP, Standalone)
  • Platform: macOS & Windows
  • Version: 1.0.5
  • Kontakt: Not required — CC-Sampler is an independent plugin engine

The Instrument

Fluid Trumpets is a performed staccato library covering ensemble trumpets. It runs on CC-Sampler — a custom plugin that installs directly in your DAW without requiring Kontakt or any other sample player.

Samples were recorded as continuous musical performances, not isolated single hits, so each one keeps the connection into the note as it was played. Every sample is aligned to its rhythmic peak, and that alignment is consistent — quantize the part and it sits with the rest of your template.

Why It's Called "Fluid"

The Sample Start control sets how much of the recorded performance you hear before the rhythmic peak. At 0 ms you get the instant attack. Move it toward -250 ms and you get the attack plus the connection into the note as it was played — the transition that keeps ostinatos and repeated figures connected rather than retriggered.

Microphone Channels

4 independent mic channels with individual volume and on/off controls:

Bite Solo Solo — close mics: attack and detail up front
Bite Ens Ensemble — close mics: edge and definition across the section
Body Solo Solo — the fuller, rounder side of the tone
Body Ens Ensemble — weight and blend across the section

Mic channels and Mix presets are mutually exclusive. Activating a mix preset deactivates all mic channels, and vice versa. Default state: Realistic.

Up to 4 mic channels can be active at once.

Mix Presets

2 ready-to-use mix presets, each a full channel of its own:

  • Realistic — Natural mix — the recorded balance, active by default
  • Hybrid — Alternate mix — a tighter, more forward balance

The individual mic channels remain available for composers who want full mixing control.

Dynamic Layer Control

Fluid Trumpets is recorded in 3 dynamic layers, and Dynamic Layer Control decides how you reach them. You set where velocity crosses into each layer, the shape of that response, how much volume separates one layer from the next, and how far they crossfade. Widen the spread and accents cut through; narrow it and a line stays even.

Fluid Trumpets has 3 dynamic layers. Dynamic Layer Control gives you four separate ways to shape how they respond to your playing:

  • Range (Zone Boundaries): Draggable split points that set where each dynamic layer activates across the velocity range.
  • Velocity Curve: Interactive graph with three modes — Linear, Shelf, and Fixed — to reshape how your keyboard velocity maps to the instrument.
  • Per-Layer Volume: Independent volume offset for each dynamic layer (-12 to +6 dB), on top of the layer change.
  • Crossfade: Controls the overlap between adjacent layers. At zero, layers switch hard with no fade. Higher values crossfade the transition.

Transitions between layers use equal-power crossfading, so there are no volume dips or bumps at the crossover point. All settings can be saved as presets.

Performance Controls

  • Sample Start (-250ms to 250ms — default -74ms): How much of the recorded performance before the rhythmic peak you hear. At 0ms, the instant attack; further left, the full natural approach into the note. Two modes: Live snaps to 0ms for latency-free real-time recording. DAW recalls a saved position for playback with the full natural attack.
  • Sample Start Offset (-60ms to +60ms): Fine-tune the start position in 1ms increments for precise alignment when composing in a DAW.
  • Tightness: Pitch-independent time-stretching via WSOLA (Window-Synchronized Overlap-Add). Plays each note back faster or slower without changing its pitch. At its default the engine is bypassed entirely with zero CPU overhead.
  • Attack (0 – 4000ms — default 5ms): Shapes the onset of each note.
  • Release (0 – 4000ms — default 1006ms): Controls the fade after key release.

Convolution Reverb

Type: True stereo convolution (4 mono engines: LL, LR, RL, RR)
Impulse Responses: Studio-grade quad-channel IRs (embedded)
Amount: -60 to +6 dB, default -16 dB (send-based — dry signal untouched)
Time: 0–100% (exponential decay envelope on IR)
Predelay: 0–150ms, default 0ms
Auto-bypass: After 2 seconds of silence (zero CPU when idle)

Rhythmic Patterns Engine (step sequencer)

The Rhythmic Patterns Engine turns held notes into driven rhythmic figures without leaving the instrument. Start from the included patterns or build and save your own, and the dynamics you set shape how each hit lands — so a repeated figure breathes instead of repeating flat.

Steps per Pattern: Up to 32
Subdivisions: 1/4, 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16, 1/16T, 1/32
Per-Step Control: On/off, velocity (0–127), accent, gate ratio (5–100%)
Favorite Slots: 8, with assignable MIDI keyswitches
Tempo Sync: DAW sync (automatic) or internal clock (40–300 BPM)
  • Activation: Sustain pedal (CC64) arms the sequencer. Notes played while the pedal is held trigger the active pattern. Latch mode available for toggle operation.
  • Start Modes: Immediate (on the note), Next Beat (quantized to the next quarter note), or Next Bar (quantized to the next bar boundary).
  • Chord Detection: Real-time chord identification via lookup table (26 chord templates, handles all inversions). Single notes, intervals and full chords are all recognised.
  • Octave Doubling: Mark points in the pattern where the engine triggers an additional note one or two octaves below, for extra low-end weight.
  • Humanize: Applies timing jitter and velocity variation for natural feel.
  • Pattern Editor: Full visual step editor. Draw velocities, toggle accents, adjust step length. Create your own patterns and save them under a name.
  • Keyswitch Switching: Assign patterns to MIDI notes and switch between them mid-performance without stopping playback.

Additional Features

  • MIDI Learn: Right-click any control to assign a MIDI CC. Supports continuous (linear 0–127) and toggle (on/off) mapping, with auto-detection of the mapping type and visual feedback during learn mode.
  • Presets: Factory presets plus unlimited user presets. Full plugin state is saved per preset, with modified-state detection.
  • Built-in Keyboard: Playable MIDI keyboard with velocity sensitivity, playable range indication and keyswitch highlighting.

  • Multi-Output Routing: Individual channel routing to separate DAW mixer tracks is planned for a future version.

Goal #1: Keep the trumpets in the orchestral realm and add technology on top, so they do what is not typical and your music sounds like you.

Goal #2: Make it fluid — you decide how much of the performance before the rhythmic peak you keep, you shape the dynamics, and rhythmic patterns are a click away instead of another patch or a bigger template.
